Setting up Starlink in your RV sounds intimidating — a satellite dish on your roof? — but the entire process takes 60–90 minutes and requires only basic tools. I've done this setup on two different RVs now and can walk you through every step, plus the gotchas that will save you hours of frustration.

What You'll Need

Beyond the Starlink kit itself, you need a few supporting items:

• Starlink Roam Kit: Standard Actuated dish — $599 from Starlink
• Cable Entry Gland: $20 weatherproof pass-through for the cable
• RV Mount: Low-profile roof mount or ground tripod
• Basic tools: Drill, sealant (Dicor self-leveling), screwdriver, level

Mounting the Dish — 3 Options

Option 1: Permanent Roof Mount (Best Long-Term)

The most secure option is a permanent low-profile roof mount. Mount stays up during travel, saves setup time at every campground. Drawback: requires drilling roof penetrations.

Option 2: Ground Tripod Mount (Most Flexible)

A ground-deployable tripod mount gives maximum flexibility — deploy in clearings away from trees, move for optimal sky view. Drawback: must deploy and retract at every campsite.

Option 3: Ladder Mount (Compromise)

A mount that attaches to your RV rear ladder — permanent-ish but removable without drilling. Good middle ground.

Cable Routing Through RV Roof

The Starlink cable enters your RV through a cable entry gland — a weatherproof pass-through that protects against water intrusion. The standard Starlink cable is proprietary and hard to shorten, so plan your route carefully.

Alternative: Use an existing roof penetration like a vent or slide seam if you can do so cleanly. Many RVers route the cable through an existing refrigerator vent.

Connecting the Router

The Starlink router needs 120V AC power. In an RV:

• Shore power: Plug directly into any outlet. Works anywhere you have 30A/50A hookups.
• Generator: Works, but generators produce dirty power. Use a surge protector.
• Inverter off battery: For boondocking. Requires 100W+ pure sine wave inverter.
• Power station: EcoFlow/Jackery with AC output works perfectly.

For a cleaner setup, consider replacing the stock Starlink router with a more capable travel router that provides better QoS for gaming.

Activation & First Use

After physical setup:

1. Download the Starlink app (iOS or Android)
2. Create your Starlink account and activate Roam service
3. Power on the dish — it will auto-orient to the optimal angle
4. Calibration takes 10–15 minutes. Don't move the dish during this time.
5. Once online, your dish will self-optimize over the next 12 hours

The Starlink app shows real-time satellite obstructions, signal strength, and speed. Use the obstruction check feature to verify your mount location.

Optimizing Starlink for Gaming

Out of the box, Starlink is fine for gaming. But you can squeeze more performance with these tweaks:

1. Connect gaming devices via Ethernet. The Starlink router has no Ethernet ports by default — you need the optional Ethernet Adapter ($25). This reduces WiFi latency by 3–8ms.
2. Use a gaming QoS router. The GL.iNet above prioritizes game traffic over other network usage.
3. Enable "Priority" mode in the Starlink app (Roam plan).
4. Position dish with maximum sky visibility. Trees and obstructions cause brief disconnects.
5. Stow dish during thunderstorms. While Starlink handles rain, lightning is no joke for electronics.

Common Problems & Fixes

Problem: Frequent brief disconnects

Solution: Usually an obstruction issue. Check the Starlink app for obstruction map and reposition dish.

Problem: Slow speeds in busy campgrounds

Solution: This is deprioritization — too many Starlink users in one area. Move to Priority mode if on Roam, or wait until off-peak hours.

Problem: Router overheating

Solution: The stock Starlink router runs hot. Keep it in an open area, not inside a cabinet. Consider replacing with a better router.

Problem: Can't connect gaming console

Solution: Check NAT type in console settings. If strict, enable UPnP on the Starlink app or add the console's MAC address to the whitelist.
